This month's Southeastern Virginia city blog is all about Yorktown. A small town that is full of rich history. It was one of the original eight shires in colonial Virginia. It is the site of the siege and subsequent surrender of General Charles Cornwallis to General George Washington during the American Revolutionary War on October 19, 1781, effectively ending the war.
A good portion of Yorktown is now a National Park; you can walk through the battlefield and visit the Victory monument. The main street is still lined with Colonial-era buildings, museums, some converted to galleries, and my favorite, Mobjack Bay Coffee Roasting Company.
Down the hill from the National Park is Yorktown's Riverfront. It is filled with restaurants and shops. I enjoyed a late lunch at the Waterstreet Grill with water views. A public beach along the York river makes for a great lazy afternoon. I enjoyed a walk along the river and watched the Tall Ship Alliance cruise under the Coleman Bridge.
If you love history or enjoy time by the water Yorktown has something for everyone.
Let me know what you think of Yorktown.
In 2022 I will be featuring a different city or town in southeastern Virginia and using all my photographic skills, drone, food photography, and architectural photography. I hope it will open my eyes to new places close to my home and inspire some of you to visit.
