For February's southeast Virginia blog, I am featuring Chesapeake. Chesapeake went from a city of farmland to the second-most populous city in Virginia. It now features urban areas but still has a mixture of farmlands and huge parks. The Greenbrier area features shopping and restaurants and the corporate headquarters of Dollar Tree. Just a few miles away, in the Hickory section of the city, you still have farms and old fashion stores.
The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway runs through it, and I loved watching the Great Bridge Locks open and close to let the boats through that are traveling down the waterway highway. The drone made this fun to capture.
Several huge parks are throughout the city. My three favorites were Northwest River Park, where you can kayak and hike. Oak Grove Lake Park has a 1.5 walking and running trail surrounding the lake. City Park features many different activities, from skateboarding, basketball courts and an amphitheater.
I found two bridges to be both architecturally pleasing and exciting. The first is the Bunch Walnut Bridge, an old wooden bridge deep in Chesapeake. My favorite is the modern South Norfolk Jordan Bridge; it connects Chesapeake to Portsmouth, vast and beautiful, and the sunsets there cannot be beaten.
Please look through the images below and let me know what you think of Chesapeake. The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway runs through it and I loved watching the Great Bridge Locks open and close to let the boats through that are traveling down the waterway highway.

In 2022 I will be featuring a different city or town in southeastern Virginia. I hope it will open my eyes to new places close to my home and inspire some of you to visit.
